About Us

Established in 1954 by philanthropist Lee Choon Seng (1888—1966), Poh Ern Shih started off as a modest, single storey temple, and was one of the few Chinese Mahayana temples in Singapore dedicated to the Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

The 3 Pillars of Poh Ern Shih

Buddhist temples and monasteries propagate the teachings of the Buddha, and they each differ from one another slightly, depending on the practice focus. Here at Poh Ern Shih, our practice focus is rooted in these three fundamentals.

Offerings to the Buddha

An easy way to get started with practising Buddhism is to regularly offer lights, flowers and other sacred items to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

Each item represents yourself along the journey towards Enlightenment, and the more you make these offerings, the more blessings you'll receive to help you become a better individual.

Many come to Poh Ern Shih with personal wishes and this is the most common route chosen for divine guidance.

Annual Pujas

Pujas are Buddhist events tied to a Buddha or Bodhisattva on dedicated days in the Lunar Calendar. While variations occur throughout Asia, Pujas most typically found everywhere include the Lunar New Year, Vesak Day and Hungry Ghost Festival.

As each Puja is a concerted effort to celebrate the teachings of a particular Buddha or Bodhisattva, many believe that taking part will bring expanded blessings. Individuals with bigger challenges in life, or with issues due to karmic debtors or ancestors usually find resolution through Pujas.

At Poh Ern Shih, we celebrate multiple Pujas every year, with Ullambana (also known as Hungry Ghost Festival) being the biggest event of all.

JHS Montessori Kindergarten

(An independent, non-religious operation)

These days our lives are technology-led and screen-focused. While these bring advantages, it is still important for our children to learn in an environment of simplicity and be as close as possible to nature and history.

Poh Ern Shih's massive 46,938 square foot compound is nestled in the vicinity of Kent Ridge Park and surrounded by notable heritage in Singapore, and we believe that the temple grounds make for a perfect learning environment for our young.

Thus, we created JHS Montessori Kindergarten: a secular, non-religious pre-school where children learn according to Montessori educational principles and explore their surroundings in a safe, simple and fun way.

The kindergarten is run independently as a separate entity from Poh Ern Shih. Click through below to find out more about its curriculum and fees!
