Poh Ern Shih Renovation Fundraise

About Poh Ern Shih

Poh Ern Shih, which translates as “Temple of Gratitude”, was founded in 1954 by banker and philanthropist Mr Lee Choon Seng as an expression of compassion, gratitude, and filial piety. It is also a memorial to the lives lost during the Battle of Pasir Panjang in World War II.

Dedicated to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Di Zang Wang Pusa), whose vows embody tireless care for suffering beings, the temple has always kept its doors open to all—regardless of race or faith—offering solace to both the departed and the living.

After over five decades of service, the temple has expanded into Singapore’s first eco-friendly, elderly-friendly Buddhist temple, marrying tradition with sustainability and accessibility.

Purpose of fundraising

The temple is now at a point where essential renovation is needed to keep it safe, dignified, and comfortable for daily worship and community use. With frequent services, visitors, and many elderly devotees, key infrastructure—especially ageing electrical systems—must be upgraded to reduce safety risks and meet today’s standards.

Singapore’s heat and humidity also make improved cooling and ventilation important, not just for the comfort of seniors during long prayers and ceremonies, but also to protect sacred spaces, furnishings, scriptures, and altars from long-term wear.

Beyond infrastructure, parts of the temple’s worship areas have served the community for years and require refurbishment so the temple remains a serene, respectful place for practice, remembrance, and refuge.

Your support helps Poh Ern Shih continue its mission—serving all who enter its doors, now and for generations to come.

Your support generates immense merit

The Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva emphasises how restoring temples that have fallen into disrepair, and how the breadth of one’s aspiration shapes the magnitude of the merits that arise.

[Chapter 10 - The Conditions and Comparative Merits and Virtues of Giving] says:

Moreover, Earth Store, in the future leaders of nations, Brahmans, and others may, upon

encountering ancient Buddhist stupas and monasteries or sutras and images that are

damaged, decaying, or broken, resolve to restore them.

Those leaders and good people may then do so themselves or encourage others, as many

as hundreds of thousands of people to help and thereby establish affinities.

Those leaders and good people will become Wheel-Turning Kings for hundreds of

thousands of successive lives and those who made offerings with them will be leaders of

small nations for as many lives.

If, before the stupas or monasteries, they resolve to dedicate that merit, then, based on

that limitless and unbounded reward, those leaders, good people, and their helpers will

eventually all complete the path to Buddhahood.

In other words, the Buddha teaches that those who step forward to initiate and lead the restoration of a ruined temple—whether by organising it personally or rallying many others to support it—create extraordinarily vast merits; and those who joyfully join in and give alongside them also receive profound wholesome results. Most crucially, if one does not keep the merit for oneself but dedicates it outward—aspiring that all beings realise Buddhahood—then the merit expands through that vast intention, becoming immeasurable and planting the causes for awakening.

According to The Lotus Sutra, when one sponsors the building of a temple and Buddhist altars, ten kinds of merit may be generated:

  1. Various unwholesome karma accumulated since the beginning of time can be reduced or eliminated.

  2. Protected and blessed by heavenly beings. Misfortune can be transformed into good fortune.

  3. Obstacles are removed, sparing one the suffering of retaliation from past enmities.

  4. Demons and evil spirits cannot harm one.

  5. Freed from afflictions and ignorance.

  6. Ample clothing and food; blessings and prosperity that endure.

  7. One’s words and actions bring joy to both humans and heavenly beings.

  8. Increased reserves of both blessings (merit) and wisdom.

  9. Rebirth in wholesome realms, with dignified appearance and endowed with blessings and good fortune.

  10. Rebirth in a land where one can hear Buddha's Dharma, and swiftly realise Buddhahood.
